Update

I'm posting up an update of what's going on at the gym currently...

Monday - There are openings for the 11am and 3:30pm slots, 5:00pm is filling quickly

Tuesday - 11am is FULL, openings for 3:30pm and 5:00pm only!

Wednesday - Same as Monday

Thursday - Same as Tuesday

Friday - 11am is FULL, openings for 3:30pm and 5:00pm filling quickly!!!

Saturday - only a few openings left at 9:30am and 11am

If you need more info on scheduling or you would like to schedule a walk thru with a trainer, please call 951 346-6900.

As for me I am debating on wether to participate in a Strongman Comp. this weekend in San Diego. All events are pretty heavy, but there is only one way to find out if I am getting stronger, and competition is always fun...hmmm.

Eat to WIN!

I understand the holiday(s) are here...but if you want to effectively create YOUR best physique, you must eat to WIN!

I'm sure everyone that is reading this eats "clean" or Organic or whatever...
It's not enough to eat well sometimes. Honestly if you were to write down everything you ate and drank for a week, would you still say you eat clean looking back on your list?

I didn't think so! Cheat meals are once a week, not once a day. To totally maximize your gains made in the Gym, eating properly and on time will create the best results in Your body.

Are supplements mandatory...? No, but they do enhance your results by giving the body the essentials needed to grow lean muscle quickly. Like I said before, they are not neccessary, especially if you are on a budget. There are some great deals on different Proteins at various online and retail stores. If anything, I would suggest a source of Whey Protein directly after a workout at minimum. This will aid your recovery from any workout.

Things are picking up here in So.Cal., which is a blessing since this time of year people are focusing on the Holidays and such. It is amazing to watch are old clients (H.S. students) roll in more mature and hitting puberty. They look forward to getting back in the gym to get jacked and tear up the field again next year.

WTF...!

I have a bone to pick with Doctors today. Why?

Because a client text me and said, his Dr. thinks he is over training or training too hard, and to modify it to focus more on Core Strength...?

WTF!

His Dr., definitely doesn't know what we do at our gym!

If anything, the "Core" is engaged constantly at our place. We have no place to sit and talk about who banged who last night. There is no juice bar to chill at. No machines to hang your towel on, $**t there's no machines period. We deal with plain old Body Weight and Free Weights. End of story!

If your doc is giving out work-out advice, then why have a trainer / coach? If he's not to busy giving out free advice on stuff he has no idea about, just ask him whose going to win the Super Bowl, and then law down a fat bet!

Seriously, is this guy for real. I don't prescribe meds to my clients, so please don't prescribe work-out tips to yours.

The "F" Word....

Hey guys, I wanted to go over one of the most over rated words in the Fitness Industry. Are you ready? I'm not kidding! It starts with an F... Ok, here you go!

"Functional"

So what just ran thru your mind?

I believe a lot of terms in our industry are over used and not taken in the right context. Just because it's the latest fad or facilities and trainers think they can make a quick buck.

Functional is definitely used out of context in the fitness arena, on a daily basis in many gyms, magazines, books and e-mails. Everywhere you look, someone is saying that standing on a Bosu Ball on one foot performing a squat is going to carry over to whatever it is you are doing.

What in the world are they thinking?

I mean seriously, how can a one legged squat on a dome produce results for a Police Officer? Firefighter? Lawyer? Teacher?

It can't!

If you disagree, TOUGH $**T!

The Bosu Ball may have it's place in the fitness industry...(If you say so)? But, if you are telling me that it is Functional, you are full of $**T! In no way shape or form does this and many other insane products become functional. If you want the latest and greatest work-out equipment, just stay up late at night and buy anything endorsed by that Jake guy or anything that you sit or lay on that will produce your new 6-Pack Abs in 2 minutes a day.

New does not always mean better, nor does it mean it serves a purpose. Follow the old adage, "If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It!"

I have worked in the Fire Service for 14+ years, and never was I on one foot performing any task that my job required. If you are looking to be functional and not full of it, try any old school bodyweight movement that will engage your Core and cause proprioception in your stabilizer mucles. Such as a simple Walking Lunge or a Box Jump. These exercises don't require any fancy equipment and Bodyweight Movements are amazing for building incredible strength, explosiveness and flexibility!

Inspiration?!.

I have a question for all of you... Yes, YOU!

Where do you find your inspiration?



So, why do I ask...? I want to know what makes you tick, what gets you out of bed, what reasoning you have for doing what you do everyday?

Please, take a moment and really think about these questions. I understand most people will say their family, etc. But I don't think that really is your final answer!

How can I say this? Simple, I know you love your family, but...what's in it for you?

You see, there are two ways to work-out, first is Physically and second there is Spiritually.

We all know the Physical aspect right, get in a great work-out, even if it's only 15 minutes and you feel so much better! But, the Spiritual work-out is much different. You and I both know, that in order to work-out your Soul, it takes little to no physical work at all.

For example, you see a homeless person not bothering anyone, and you feel in your soul to give a little assistance (financial, food, interaction)... How do you feel? As good or better than you do after a physical work-out? Probably. The Spiritual work-out can occur once an hour or once a month, it doesn't matter. It usually feels Great, right?

That's what I'm looking for, what inspires you? I know this isn't your typical post from me, but it really is from me!

I've been blessed by people that I've come in contact with to view them as my Guardian Angels, a.k.a. Mentors. These people have touched my Soul, and have created in me some amazing things I didn't think I could accomplish on my own.

When I sought out to open my own Gym, I sat around one evening with my wife and told her I wasn't sure what I was suppose to be doing in life. Now granted, we were financially stable at the time, living in a dream home and driving nice vehicles...but, I wasn't happy with the direction in which my life was headed. I couldn't imagine staying at my current job for another 26+ years until I could "retire".

So later on that week, I began searching out a few avenues that I would consider changing careers into. Thru my curiosity on the internet, I saw this amazing video of a young man doing a simple Box Jump. Now, you may say, what's a box jump or why are you impressed by a person jumping onto a platform from a static position? Well, it wasn't an ordinary height...it was a static jump onto three boxes, stacked up to a whopping 54 inches!

It impresses the hell out of me, to this day! I couldn't stop watching it, I was so taken by the power and focus it took to complete this task. Right then, I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! I ran upstairs, woke my wife up, and proceeded to convince her to come down stairs and watch this video. After showing her, I told her this is what I want to do. I want to help athletes and regular gym goers, realize their potential thru training properly (not exactly how I said it to her, hahaha).

I loved working out, I loved showing people proper form and technique, and I felt it in my Soul that it was what I was suppose to be doing!

So now you know a little piece of my story...what is your passion, what is your motivation, better yet what Inspires YOU!!!

Question..?

I have been reading a lot lately about trainers and their clientel... What I find very interesting, is how so many people differ on how young to start a youth athlete. What is the right age to start weight training?

I think there are a lot of factors that go into this equation... Ready?!.

Here goes my two cents...
First, who are your target clients and can you sustain your business with them?

Second, if you are targetting youth athletes, how young are you looking to train?

Third, do you have a specific routine you follow for this type of athlete?

Fourth, do you plan on training these specific clients at certain times only?

Fifth, what atmosphere are you trying to create at Your Facility?

Let me expand. If your target is youths, then what ages are you considering? 7, 8, 9 yrs. old? What can you do with them? Speed Work, Agility, Plyos? Do you have a specific business plan and marketing plan to target this group of kids?

Some parents are very gungho about making their child the next A-Rod or Mia Hamm, but are they realistic? Can you reach their goals on a limited schedule?
They would rather pay you a fee to better there childs abilities, then take there chances on natural selection. So, can you come thru with these expectations?
Come on we've all seen some Coaches only play their child at pivotal positions on a team, not because their child is the best but because it's their child.

What qualifies you to train a 7 year old, on the exercises you are putting them thru? Will these exercises actually make them better? I'm not sure what to do with a 7 year old, let alone do I even want to try.

Having a gym full of 7-9 year olds, won't draw in any true Athletes to your gym. Trust me on this one! I definitely don't want my MMA guys training in the same gym with a 3rd grader. I'm not sure, but I would bet most parents wouldn't either.

I've seen gyms in my area try and cater to everyone in the family, not like a corporate gym. They try and section off the gym in order to have the whole family train at once in different areas. I have yet to see it work?

Can and should kids train with weights and other objects? Sure, is it neccessary? Don't think so. Will it make a big difference in how they play their sport? Maybe?

I personally don't accept any youths under 13 years old, occassionally I will accept a 12 year old. But they need to be very coordinated and show a level of maturity that will add to the atmosphere of the group training.
Don't get me wrong, I love training youth athletes! There are an amazing group of kids that roll thru our doors, and they are making tremendous gains in their strength and athleticism, which is carrying over in to their respected sports.
I choose not to take very young athletes, Why? Because it doesn't serve two purposes... First, they won't add to the Intensity of the gym and how much can an 8 year old do in my facility besides agility drills? Second, they may deter some Serious athletes from joining my gym. I do not run a day care service, I want to train athletes that want to train hard and fast.

Usually my clients have a Goal in mind, when they walk in to our facility. Whatever it may be, that is what we train for and towards. A child that is still learning how to tie their shoes is not to going to add to our atmosphere. If you are still reading this, you probably have a good grasp on your client base and who you like and don't like training.
Find your niche, and go 100% towards it...don't focus on the money.

Stay Positive...

At times not everything seems bright, I believe we all are experiecing new moments of not so great times...
BUT, what if, life was perfect, at all times? What if, we never went without? What if, we had no tests of our will and determination?

Life would suck!

There is a clear separation of those that will, and those that will just complain about those that will.
If everything was perfect there would be no sports, no competition, no voting, no fatty's, no problems and no worries. How freakin' boring would that be?

Life is totally about the tough times, and how tough you become and keep going! If life was perfect, we wouldn't be blogging our opinions, or sharing our triumphs with each other...

For me, I am tired of being sick and tired! We can totally change our outlook on what we are going thru and what we do about it.

I have definitely had a few gut checks this week alone...
Fortunately I am blessed to be able to drop off my kids at school every morning, and I cherish those moments.. But, I definitely was getting way to comfortable. I left out my aggressive nature and just let life keep happening to me. It's time to turn up the fire under my butt and to get going on growing my business so that I may be around for my family all the time!
I am very thankful to have a few Guardian Angels on my side. Do YOU?

Lovin' Life

Just had a great weekend with the family...! Also, we were fortunate enough to be invited down to the O.C. to check out Chad Smith and Company's new Gym, www.JuggernautTrainingSystems.com Beautiful place, with a great Staff!

This week has already started out with a BANG! We unwrapped our new Atlas Stone today, it turned out pretty good (not bad for my first try). I was also honored by a local Gym owner / Coach, Tony Falaro of Authentic Strength Training. He asked me if it would be ok to do a Video Interview for his Blog...of course I said yes, I am blessed to be able to Pay It Forward! I will post the link as soon as I get it, I am very excited to see the finished product.
As a gift to Tony and his Gym, I donated our new Atlas Stone to them, plus I pulled out the video camera as Tony was able to lift it for the very first time...pretty soon he will be tearing the stones up.

Can't wait for tomorrow, clients rolling thru the gym to get jacked and get in crazy shape! Check out this video from last week...

31 Day Challenge

Hey everyone....
Sorry for the long delay, but we are back and ready to kick A$$!

I am starting this month off with a 31 day straight video porting challenge to myself... Why you may ask? Why not, Challenging yourself can create growth, which is what I am after. You're either Growing or You are Dying!

This first one is a fairly high Box (Tire) Jump... You can see we don't have boxes so we improvise, which is perfect if you are starting your own Garage / Warehouse Gym on a budget. Tires are FREE!

This video shows a few of our younger studs using a Yoke... It is an amazing tool to target your core in every plane, and also to pack on the muscle on these kids.

I know it's hard enough to spell without trying to determine what it actually does to you. So here is the second part of the story from Mike Geary C.N.S.

The Hidden Truth About "Reducing Your Cholesterol"

You may be surprised at the REAL causes of heart disease -- and it's NOT saturated fat or cholesterol

We all know that heart disease is one of the leading killers of people around the world, particularly highest in countries such as the US and Australia.

However, did you know that there are several medical studies worldwide that clearly show that higher cholesterol levels in the body actually increases longevity instead of decreasing it? Yes, you heard that right! People with high cholesterol have been statistically shown to live longer and healthier than people with low cholesterol in several studies. There are multiple references for this phenomenon in Shane Ellison's controversial book, The Hidden Truth about Cholesterol Lowering Drugs, Dr. Uffe Ravnskov's (MD, PhD) book entitled The Cholesterol Myths, as well as Sally Fallon and Mary Enig's book, Nourishing Traditions.

So why in the world are the pharmaceutical and medical industry pushing for practically everyone on the planet to "lower their cholesterol"? Well, the first, and more innocent answer, is flawed medical studies from decades ago that have been accepted as fact and never fully analyzed for their validity. Another answer is that this practice of recommending that half of the damn planet takes a cholesterol lowering medication (currently, statins), regardless of whether they truly have any real risk for heart disease, creates insane multi-squillion dollar profits for the drug companies!

As a perfectly absurd example of how doctors have been wrongly influenced by the drug companies... a couple years ago, I was a perfectly healthy 28 yr old, in great shape, exercising daily, eating a balanced healthy diet full of antioxidants and quality nutrition, no smoking, and with no real risk factors for heart disease, and just because my cholesterol level has been consistently measured over 200 for my entire life, my doctor recommended I consider using a cholesterol lowering statin drug.

Consider how outlandish this scenario is! The drug companies have hypnotized doctors into prescribing unnecessary prescription drugs to healthy young people with perfectly normal cholesterol levels that just happen to be over this arbitrary number of 200 that they've come up with. Luckily, I refused to be a guinea pig and fork over my hard earned duckets for potentially dangerous drugs, and decided to start researching this whole cholesterol and heart disease connection myself. Consider also that my father, who is now 60 years old, has had cholesterol levels slightly over 200 his entire life also (just like me), yet he is perfectly healthy at his ripe age of 60.

High Cholesterol is NOT the Villain!

As time goes on and scientists continue to learn more about heart disease, it has become quite clear over the recent years that inflammation within the body (NOT cholesterol levels) is what causes plaque build up in the arteries and eventual heart disease. Inflammation can be caused by many personal factors such as stress, smoking, viruses, consumption of refined and/or hydrogenated fats (man-made trans fats), an imbalance of omega-6 polyunsaturated fats to omega-3 polyunsaturated fats in the diet, excess refined sugars in the diet, etc.

Here's a quick and dirty of how it works in general. Cholesterol is a healing substance within the body (among many other important functions), and responds to arterial inflammation by getting deposited in combination with other substances, forming "plaque" as a healing agent on the artery lining.

Levels of inflammation in your body can be measured with what's called a CRP test (c-reactive protein). The accuracy of this test still has room for improvement, as it can vary depending on the time of day and other factors, but it is a much better indication of heart disease risk than a cholesterol test (which is practically useless for determining heart disease risk).

Another more important test than cholesterol levels for heart disease risk is a test for serum homocysteine levels. The next time your doctor wants you to get blood cholesterol tests, request CRP and homocysteine tests instead. He/she should be well aware of the validity of these tests if they are up to date.

Basically, if you have significant internal inflammation, this plaque will be deposited as a healing agent regardless of whether you have high or low cholesterol. On the other hand, if you don't have inflammation, high cholesterol levels just keep circulating without getting deposited on the artery linings. Therefore, it is more important to control inflammation rather than trying to lower your cholesterol.

Lowering your cholesterol doesn't attack the root of the problem (what is actually causing the inflammation in you). Lowering your cholesterol does nothing except to make the drug companies rich, and possibly leave you with a whole assortment of possible negative side-effects.

The good news is that preventing heart disease is about living a healthy lifestyle, not about throwing down a drug pill everyday. Controlling your inflammation to prevent heart disease is as easy as reducing the stress in your life (try deep breathing exercises, Qigong, yoga, etc.), maintaining a healthy weight, eating a high-antioxidant, highly nutritious unprocessed diet (as recommended in my Truth about Six Pack Abs program), and avoiding smoking and other causes of heavy free radical production in the body.

Client Question?

I was talking with one of my clients today (58 year old male), and we started talking about his diet. I asked him how much he was eating and he replied with his amount of protein intake and such. It was fine until he mentioned his normal breakfast of egg whites! Arrggghhhhh! So on came the discussion of the whole egg vs. the egg white...

I am posting an article by Mike Geary who is a Certified Nutrition Specialist. I have been reading his articles for over a year and I can honestly say I trust every word he prints. Please read with an open mind, because tomorrow we will go over the "C" word...

"Whole Eggs, including the yolk (not just egg whites) - Most people know that eggs are one of the highest quality sources of protein. However, most people don't know that the egg yolks are the healthiest part of the egg... that's where almost all of the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants (such as lutein) are found in eggs.

Egg Yolks contain more than 90% of the calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, thiamin, B6, folate, and B12, and panthothenic acid of the egg. In addition, the yolks contain ALL of the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K in the egg, as well as ALL of the essential fatty acids. Also, the protein of whole eggs is more bio-available than egg whites alone due to a more balanced amino acid profile that the yolks help to build.

Just make sure to choose free-range organic eggs instead of normal grocery store eggs. Similar to the grass-fed beef scenerio, the nutrient content of the eggs and the balance between healthy omega-3 fatty acids and inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids (in excess) is controlled by the diet of the chickens.

Chickens that are allowed to roam free outside and eat a more natural diet will give you healthier, more nutrient-rich eggs with a healthier fat balance compared with your typical grocery store eggs (that came from chickens fed nothing but soy and corn and crowded inside "egg factories" all day long)".

Beautiful Day...

Today one of my Trainers and our intern had a field trip to one of the nation's top colleges... USC!

We where very blessed to be accepted to take a tour of their facility and observe some training sessions with some off-season Football players.

What an amazing program run by Coach Carlisle and Staff. They where very generous and kind to us, and had an open door policy with their training methods and Q&A. We will definitely be headed back there in the near future!



As Coach Carlisle puts it best, FIGHT ON!!!

Gaining Muscle...?

I've recently heard from a lot of guys that weight train regularly..."How come I can't gain any weight?" I think the question should be, "What are you eating, how much and how hard are you training?"

I know I may get a lot of negative feedback, but... what you eat and how much is a very important role in many so called 'Hard Gainers' woes. You see, your diet is the most important key in YOU gaining the right kind of weight (muscle). Because anyone can gain weight, but if muscle is what you want... then you must prep your body for the lean muscle gains.

Take me for instance, I graduated high school at 5'11" @ 160 lbs. I know, I was a beast! Hahaha... Well not exactly, I ran Track and Wrestled a little but I had a hard time keeping weight on because of my cardio and diet. I've since changed my ways, and I'm 6'1" @ 215 lbs. You see I too was a 'Hard Gainer' until I figured out what I was lacking.

Training Day...

Usually I take weekend's off to rest and heal up any nagging injuries, but some day's you just feel like doing a little extra.

So today I'm going to do grip work. I'm going to start out with a little Rolling Thunder, then progress to plate pinch holds and finally some rice work.

Walk the Line...

I recently rewatched this movie, and what stood out the most to me is this scene...



I asked myself this question, "What Song would I sing...?"

I know I can be more, do more and have more! So I'm prepared to give my all to win! I started this gym on my last dollar on a quest to change peoples lives and bodies. I don't do this for the glory or anything else, I do it because I want to help others WIN! In their lives, in their health, in their careers...whatever it may be. Get out there and make a difference!!!

Training...

I was asked to give some of our training tips out, so here we go with our daily work-out post.

Usually Monday's are Leg work-out days, Tuesday is Chest and Back, Wednesday is Circuit or a type of full body day, Thursday is Kettlebells or Shoulders and Arms, Friday is another Circuit or Odd Object day... Weekends are off to rest.

That was a mouthful of typing... So I'll fill you in on what we did today and I will try and log in every day to keep you updated on our daily work-outs.

Legs: Usual warm-up of Jumping Rope for 4-5 min. Band warm-up of every muscle group, then stretching out (I will post our Lower Body Warm-Up/Stretch video).

Kettlebells in the rack position, then Squats w/ glutes touching a heavy bag laying on the ground, rep doesn't count if you don't touch...then we progress up in weight each set w/ reps ranging from 8-10.

Single Leg RDL on a 6" raised block...w/ a Kettlebell. We always start with the weak side first, so if you're a Right handed person, you will use your Left first on all uni-lateral movements.

We finished with a Farmer Walk, carrying our 225 lb. tire up and back 100'. We have a long driveway in the rear of our Gym, so we use the tires alot outside. It's not heavy but the grip challenge is very taxing for 200'...

Yup, this lack of action can be the difference between you living the life you want or staying right where you are currently at.
The difference between being to scared to live your dreams out, or working that Just Over Broke place you dread everyday going to.

Make a choice right now to change what you are doing, and start doing what you love to do!

If it's becoming a Fireman, Doctor, Teacher or whatever...just go do it. Do what you love, not what ou have to do. If you love what you do, you will never work another day in your life!

New Year = Strong Year!

Hey everyone, Happy New Year!!! I am very excited to bring in '09 with a bang. We will be bringing our very first seminar to the Gym on February 21st. Any and all are welcome, well kind of...only the first 20 will be accepted.
